Verisign was trying to make money off of invalid .com domains in all browsers, they control the .com registry. They managed to get away with it for a while, until they were stopped.
I wonder why Microsoft hasn't put ads in their 404 page, it wouldn't be against the law like Verisign did since it's just within their program.
